With the current election for presidential candidates going on in the U.S. there is allot of emphasis being put upon environmental issues, and I love to see that. However, I am not going to preach about who the American people should vote for or who has the best best stance on environmental issues, but what we are going to talk about is what happens when the government has an active role in leading the way on these serious issues.
It just recently came to my attention that as a result of taxation by the Irish government, plastic bag usage was down 94% in a matter of weeks. Plastic bags were not outlawed, just made publicly unacceptable, and Ireland implemented a tax-based incentive to cut usage. Very impressive to see the least! It will be interesting to see if this trend continues in the future, but I think it is clearly evident that when government steps in, a difference can be made. Click here for the full article.
