Finding the balance between innovation and sustainability

A Genius Idea

Efficiency is a word found in many aspects of business and life. With regards to energy and sustainability, we see that not only do we need to explore more renewable energy sources but we also have to become more efficient with the energy we already have. So what’s a city to do when they are confronted with a lack of energy and the steps necessary to solve the problem?

Very often the decision will be made to either build a dirty, cheap coal plant or build a hazardous nuclear plant to solve an energy problem. In Panama they have taken a genius approach to solving an energy problem that has endless benefits. What if instead of building a new power plant, that comes with all the labour, materials, waste and emissions, you were to spend 13 million on CFL’s. The move would provide an average of two CFLs per citizen, push back the need to add 60 MW of power, and costs about one tenth of setting up another power plant.

Now sure a renewable energy power plant would have been a little more nice to see, but this is a great example of thinking outside the box in an environmental aspect. This is an interesting move by Panama and it will be interesting to see if it works. Click here to learn all the details.

Keep it Green,

Paul
